Girls track team hopes to build on success

The return of several section qualifiers and plenty of depth are two of the strengths of Ely’s high school girls track team.Ely placed third in subsection competition a year ago. Most of that team is back, and many of the Timberwolves’ key athletes were either on the school’s section championship cross country running or Nordic ski teams. Some were part of both.“The success of the cross country ski team and cross country running team hopefully will move into the track season a little bit,” said Ely Head Coach Todd Hohenstein. Most of Ely’s top returnees were a part of at least one of the two teams.Casey Sovil, only a ninth-grader, was a top performer in cross country and a section qualifier in track in the 800 meter hurdles as an eighth-grader last spring.Sovil, juniors Kelly Chaudoin and Jenna Klein and senior Raychal Zupancich advanced to sections in the 3,200 meter relay last year.“Casey Sovil is really coming along,” said Hohenstein. “And the (3,200) relay that went to sections, all of those girls are back. I’m looking forward to hopefully putting together a good team.Junior Ali Schulze (400 dash) earned a section meet appearance last year, and ninth-grader Carolyn Freeman returns after a third-place subsection finish in the 300 hurdles in 2003.The Wolves are anchored by a senior nucleus that includes Zupancich, Julie Anderson, Kelsey Moravitz, Rachel Berg and Amy Loisel.“They are kind of going to be the leadership core,” said Hohenstein. “They definitely are a solid group of upperclassmen, both juniors and seniors that are good leaders. And we have a few underclassmen that will definitely add to the team.”Ely has 37 athletes out for track in grades 7-12.“They are a great bunch of girls,” said Hohenstein. “They are a good group of athletes and very fun to work with.”The Wolves open the season Thursday at Virginia.Ely High SchoolGirls Track2004 ScheduleThursday: at VirginiaApr. 20: at HibbingApr. 27: Ely InviteMay 6: at Kerzie Invite, VirginiaMay 11: at EvelethMay 14: at HibbingMay 18: at Deer RiverMay 25: at Subsections, Hibbing
