Ely to host cross country meet

by Tom Coombe

After a series of events away from home, the Ely Timberwolves won’t have to go far to compete this week.

Thursday’s Ely Invitational is the only home event of the year for the high school boys and girls cross country teams.

The meet starts at 4 p.m. at the Ely Golf Course and figures to attract several teams and perhaps 300 or more runners.

Opponents including Chisholm, International Falls, Mt. Iron-Buhl, Mesabi East, Rock Ridge, Cloquet and Hermantown are expected.

The event comes as both Ely teams begin to hit their stride, after facing off with runners from several larger schools.

Ely, which competes at the Class A level, held their own with both AA and AAA opposition at recent meets, including the Sept. 19 Grand Rapids Invitational.

The Ely girls led all Class A competition and took third overall at Grand Rapids, and the Wolves are gathering momentum in advance of the Section 7A meet, which is coming up at Coleraine in late-October.

Ninth-grader Molly Brophy, who already has state meet experience, placed 13th at Grand Rapids while eighth-grader Mattie Lindsay broke into the varsity lineup in a big way - taking 16th in a large field.

Seniors Claire Blauch and Grace LaTourell are among those who add more depth for the Wolves, while sophomore Elsa Ellerbroek brings additional depth.

The Ely boys are led by junior Caid Chittum, a returning state meet competitor and one of the top runners in 7A. He was in the top-10 at Grand Rapids.

Silas Solum, Brooks Brenny and Eli Olson are other key runners in the Wolves’ lineup.

At last year’s home meet, the Ely boys took first among nine teams here and the girls were third out of nine.

The Ely teams were part of a meet at Hibbing, held after deadline, and the home meet is the start of a stretch run for the Wolves that will culminate with the section competition.

• The home meet will include a junior high race as well as separate five-kilometer boys and girls varsity events.

There is no charge to attend.
