Fishing Derby returns in June

After a promising debut, a fledgling Ely event is back for a second round.

The Ely Chamber of Commerce is getting set to present its Second Annual Northwoods Fishing Derby.

This year’s event is slated for Saturday, June 10, at Veterans on the Lake on Fall Lake near Ely.

The derby focuses on fishing, skills, water education, and art, and over 30 youth participated in the 2022 debut.

Plans call for the event to expand with openings for up to 60 youth who will participate in six educational modules, including; fishing, skills, water safety, invasive species, ecology and art.

Thanks to numerous sponsors, the participants can go home with cash prizes, tackle boxes, and plenty of fun fishing gear.

Each participant receives a new rod and reel, compliments of Zebco and Women Anglers of Minnesota.

The derby also includes a free lunch, T-shirt, and bandana.

The Chamber is still looking for additional sponsors, and there are many opportunities for those who would like to volunteer for the event. Volunteers also receive a free T-shirt.
