Girls show relay strength, Anderson wins again

If last Tuesday’s meet at Deer River is any indication, look out for the Ely Timberwolves’ relay teams when the subsection girls track meet is held this week.The relays continue to anchor Ely’s success this spring.The Timberwolves picked up a third-place finish at Deer River, among eight schools in the event, largely on the strength of two first-place relay teams and another that took second.Senior Julie Anderson also maintained her dominance of the 3,200 meter run, taking the Deer River race with ease.The performance helped Ely gear up for the subsection competition, which is slated for Wednesday at Hibbing.Ely heads into the event on the heels of some strong relay showings.The 3,200 meter quartet of Julie Anderson, Raychal Zupancich, Casey Sovil and Jenna Klein won going away, finishing first in 10:14.5 and topping the next-closest team by over two minutes.In the 1,600 relay, Ely was first again, but by a much closer margin.Klein, Chaudoin, Carolyn Freeman and Ali Schulze formed the winning combination, completing the course in 4:22 and beating the second-place Deer River unit by four seconds.It was Jen Zupancich, Mary Anderson, Chaudoin and Raychal Zupancich who teamed up to take second in the 800 relay (1:55.5).Ely also had a third-place 400 relay, with Mary Anderson, Mary Bruels, Jen Zupancich and Raychal Zupancich finishing in 55.97 seconds.Julie Anderson could be headed toward a section meet appearance in the 3,200, following a run of 12:15 at Deer river.The Wolves had four individual second-place finishers at Deer River.Schulze was the runner-up in the 400 dash (1:04.4), while Freeman sprinted to second in the 300 hurdles (49.3).Jen Zupancich was second in the 200 dash (27.9), and Rachel Berg threw the shot put 29 feet, 11 inches for a second-place standing.Ely’s Tomi McDonald was third in the 400 dash (1:10).The Wolves also scored in the following events:• 110 hurdles - 6. Emily Weisinger, 15.66;• 1,600 run - 5. Sarah Markwardt, 6:43;• 400 dash - 5. Taryn Cunningham, 1:14.2; 6. Lexi Barker, 1:36;• 800 run - 4. Casey Sovil, 2:29; 6. Jessie Loisel, 2:53.6;• 200 dash - 4. Mary Anderson, 28.6;• Long jump - 6. Bruels, 12-10;• Discus - 5. Berg, 87-1.Ely also participated in a May 14 meet at Hibbing, with the 3,200 relay team of Julie Anderson, Chaudoin, Sovil and Klein taking first in 10:29.3.Schulze ran to a third-place finish in the 400 dash (1:04.6), and the 1,600 relay of Klein, Chaudoin, Freeman and Schulze placed third (4:29.3).Schulze, Mary Anderson, Chaudoin and Raychal Zupancich were fourth in the 800 relay (1:59.3).
