Mary Lou (Sundell) Carlson, age 88 of Duluth, passed away on April 13 at BeeHive Assisted Living in Duluth. Mary Lou was born in Ashland, WI on May 10, 1935 to August and Edith (Saari) Sundell. She was a graduate of Duluth Denfeld High School and married Robert “Bob” Carlson on July 6, 1957 in Duluth. Mary Lou began her working career at Western Electric in Duluth followed by many years in sales at Paper Capers, Engwall’s Florist and Peterson/Anderson Florist.

Mary Lou was a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors where she was awarded Ambassador of the Year. She also received the Outstanding Service Award from the City of Duluth and a Certificate of Commendation from Governor Rudy Perpich.

She was active with the Brownie and Girl Scout troops at Grant Elementary School where she received the Bronze Scout. Mary Lou was past president of the Duluth Y Wives.

Following their retirements, they built their home on Eagles Nest Lake 4 in the Ely area and spent many years in the Ely Community. Mary Lou was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ely and Trinity Lutheran Church in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jim Sundell.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Bob; twin daughters, Deann (William) Munson of Duluth and Luann (Carl) Munson of Duluth; two grandchildren, Aunika Munson of Minnetonka and Jorgen Munson of Golden Valley; a sister, Betty (Roger) McKeever of Hermantown and beloved extended family. Mary Lou’s family would like to thank all the staff at BeeHive Assisting Living for the wonderful and loving care they provided, as well as Gentiva Hospice.

Visitation will be from 10 am until the 11 am Celebration of Life Service at Grace Lutheran Church 5454 Miller Trunk Hwy, in Hermantown to follow. Pastors Christoph Schmidt, Roger Munson and Bill Fossom officiating. Burial in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery-Duluth to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 4960 Miller Trunk Hwy. #700, Hermantown, MN 55811 or the Worship and Music Committee at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely, 301 Conan Street, Ely, MN 55731 would be appreciated.

Albin Medved, affectionately called Al, Bine, and Ata, passed away at the age of 86, in the loving arms of Jesus while in hospice care at his Plymouth home. His wife Albina and their family created a serene environment for his final days. Born in Trboje, Slovenia, on February 17, 1938, Al escaped Yugoslavia with his family in 1945 to avoid the Communist uprising. They spent nearly five years in a British-controlled displaced persons camp in Spittal, Austria, before immigrating to the United States in December 1949. With the assistance of sponsors Teresa and Ann Gillach of Pineville, MN, the family settled in Biwabik, MN, where Al graduated from high school in 1957. He then attended Virginia Junior College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. While working at Honeywell, Inc. as a patent draftsman, he attended William Mitchell College of Law and obtained a Juris Doctor, later handling intellectual property matters at Honeywell. Among his accomplishments was a successful lawsuit against Minolta for patent infringement on the “Auto Focus” feature in cameras.

Upon retiring from a distinguished career at Honeywell, Al and Albina traveled to their favorite destinations and were gracious hosts. They took pride in building homes—a Medved family legacy—and enjoyed their winter residences in Naples, Florida, and Snowmass, Colorado. In the summer, Al cherished his time at the home he built on White Iron Lake in Ely, Minnesota.

Albin was deeply involved in Slovenian cultural activities. While living in Biwabik, he founded the organization “SAVA” (Slovenski Akademiki v Ameriki or Slovenian Academics in America), named after Slovenia’s major river, to connect with friends from the displaced persons camp. The inaugural convention in Cleveland, Ohio, drew a large attendance and continued annually for several years, earning him the title “Father of SAVA.”

Al’s grandchildren—Conor and James, twin sons of Jim and Cassie Ahlin; and McKenna and Oskar, children of Mary and Patrick Ralston—provided endless joy. He was also dearly loved and known as “Uncle Al” by his nephews and nieces.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Kristina Breznik and Franc Medved, and siblings John and Kristine. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers Frank and his wife Mary, Miro and his wife Karen, and sister Bernadine and their families.

Mass of Christian Burial 11AM Saturday, April 27, 2024 at the Parish Community of St. Joseph, 8701 36th Ave. N., New Hope. Visitation one hour before prior to Mass.

Delores Jean Starkman, 77, of Ely passed away Friday, April 19, 2024 at Babbitt Care Free living.

She was born on May 7, 1946 in Pierre, SD to Marvin and Doris (Hilmer) Voss. On February 7, 1964 she married Gary Starkman in Deadwood, SD.

Survivors include her husband Gary; two sons, Michael and Dan; two grandchildren, Dylan and Danica; and four siblings, Patricia, Linda, Robin and Roy.

Private services will be held and burial will be in White Iron Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.

Sonja Kay Beltz, 82, of Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Sanford Health Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

Sonja was born July 15, 1941, in Crookston, MN, to John and Mabel (Iverson) Knutson. She grew up on her family’s farm near Nielsville, MN and graduated from high school in Halstad, MN. After graduation she worked at the Hillsboro Clinic.

On December 30, 1960, Sonja was united in marriage to Paul Beltz at St. Pietri Church in Nielsville, and they had three children together. In 1965 they moved to Ely, MN and Sonja provided daycare in her home for many years. In 1992, they moved to Moorhead and Sonja worked in the daycare at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She also worked for Country Greenery in Moorhead.

Faith was forever important to Sonja, and she was very active at Our Redeemer where she especially loved participating in the quilting group. Over the years she would contribute her skills to many beautiful quilts that were given to veteran’s groups, Churches United for the Homeless and overseas missions. Sonja will be remembered as the “unpaid social director” at her apartment building where she eagerly planned and organized activities and events for her neighbors. She faithfully served her family, friends, church and neighbors with a servant’s heart and her love and hospitality will be deeply missed.

After retirement, Sonja and Paul enjoyed traveling and camping together. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in Norway and their 50th in Hawaii. Sonja also loved gardening, canning and baking, making many memorable treats that were enjoyed by her family, friends and neighbors.

Sonja is survived by her children, Susan (Raymond) Holmes, Chehalis, WA, Valerie (David) Lahtonen, Glenburn, ND, and Steven (Jolene) Beltz, Perham, MN; siblings, John (Sharon) Knutson and Mavis Haugstad; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul and siblings, Duane Knutson, Bev Martinson and Joanne Haugen.

Visitation will be Friday, April 19, 2024, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 2:00 P.M., at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Moorhead. Burial will be at St. Pietri Cemetery, Nielsville, MN.

Jeanette (Jean) May Kosorok sadly passed away on April 17 in her home surrounded by her daughters. Jean was born on May 8, 1936. She was the eldest of eight children. Jean married Bill Kosorok on January 1, 1955.

Jean was an amazing and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening. She loved the holidays and any family gathering, which she made so special. We will miss her kind heart and beautiful smile.

Jean is survived by her daughters Veronica (Jim) Bolte, Roxane Harri, and BillieJo Edman (fiancé Bob Hendrickson); son-in-law Terry Spieker; sisters Fran Kendall, Tootsie (James) Moravitz; brothers Donald (Caroline) Mikolich and Tom (Diane) Mikolich; grandchildren Casey, Billy, Shane, Cody, Nick and Abbie; great-grandchildren, Colton, Hadley, Reese, Sloan, Eileigh, Jace and Karsyn.

Jean is preceded in death by her husband Bill; beloved daughter Valerie; parents, Frank and Beatrice Mikolich; sisters MaryAnn and Amelia; brother Terry; brother-in-law Marley; son-in-laws Jon and Darren; and niece Linda.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Bernadine “Bernie” Joan Krtinich passed away on April 17, 2024 surrounded by her family.

She was born on April 26, 1935, to Bernard and Bertha (Maki) Oja on the family farm in Jacobson. Bernie grew up in the Pengilly area where she met her husband George Krtinich and they were united in marriage on January 31, 1953, in the Nashwauk Lutheran Church. They moved to Babbitt in 1956 where they raised their two sons, Danny and Steve.

Bernie was employed by the Jaeger family at Babbitt Drug where she made many lifelong friends. Throughout her life, Bernie enjoyed bowling including traveling to tournaments, and her claim to fame was she outlived the Babbitt bowling alley. In addition, she enjoyed golfing, bus trips, gambling, and always having a good time. Bernie was also known for her amazing gift of gab, which she mastered until the very end.

Bernie is preceded in death by her parents, husband George, brothers Kenny and Rodney, brother-in-law Uncle Joe, and beloved cat Belle. She is survived by her sons Danny (Connie) Krtinich and Steve Krtinich; grandchildren Jeff Krtinich and Stacy Krtinich, Katie (Jordan) Richards, Joe (Charlsie Sartain) Krtinich; and great-granddaughters Evelyn Margot Krtinich and Ann Bernadine Richards; sister Annette (Bob) Pozos; sisters-in-law Mary Ann Elfering and Ginny Oja; and nieces and nephews Dena, Chrissy, Gary, Sue, Kim, Eric, Karen.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dr. Mathew Rolando, age 51, passed away on March 29, 2024 in San Diego, CA.

Mathew was born on May 6, 1972 in Ely, MN. He attended school in Ely and graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1990. He went to college at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in medicine./

Mathew married Sara Kay Engebretson on September 20, 2003 and they lived in Woodbury, MN with their children.

Mathew worked as a hospitalist for M Health Fairview operating out of Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury.

He and his wife had three children, Gianni, Sophia and Marco.

Mathew enjoyed outdoor activities, music and spending time with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Seraphine and Olga (Rukavina) Rolando; and Edmond and Edna (Delzer) Murto.

Mathew is survived by his wife Sara, children Gianni, Sophia and Marco, parents Seraphine and Patricia (Murto) Rolando of Ely, sister Amanda (Rolando) Barnstorf and her husband Matthew of Duluth, MN; aunt Cecilia Rolando of Ely and numerous cousins and relatives.

Services will be held April 30 at 2 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, MN.
