It’s old news in Ely

In 2003 much discussion took place in Ely in regard to America’s involvement in the Iraq war. Discussion and an anti-war resolution was also the focus of elected officials and newspapers across the country in cities large and small.If you look at the end of this article you’ll find the first page of ten that Google offered last Monday of news about anti-war resolutions.Last week a so-called newspaperman phoned the publisher and said he was planning a visit to Ely and wanted to discuss “old myths.” The publisher offered to help him find a variety of people who know of traditional myths about Ely in its early days and those who can reflect on the city as it is now.Some newspapers have agendas they wish to promote beyond their editorial page. A slant appears which is pervasive throughout the publication, made through the choices of reporting and how the story is told.When there was war controversy in Ely, the Ely Echo published seven full broadsheet pages of complete letters pro and con on the discussion over a period of three weeks. This determination to publish both sides in full letter text was an unheard of event in newspapers. These were basically unpaid inches that ate into the budget. As publisher, and incidentally a woman, I said then and will repeat now that both sides of the issue will have and did have access to print on this issue. The senior editor disagreed and left the paper. We were sorry to see him go and told him the door remained open to him as it would remain open to both sides of the issue.As publisher I am curious as to why covering both sides of an issue would cause Nick Coleman to dub the Echo as “the combative weekly newspaper that helped stoke the controversy over the Iraq resolution.”Perhaps big city newspapers, by presenting one news slant and one only, are taking the way to “smother” news.If “stoking” is what’s done when we present both sides, then stoking is what we’ll continue to do.So if you read that Coleman column on Monday, don’t tell the Echo, tell Coleman about your views.
