Jamnick, unbeaten T-S too much for Ely girls
Unbeaten Tower-Soudan completed a season sweep of Ely’s high school girls basketball team last week. Katie Jamnick, the Golden Eagles’ six-foot center, scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the second quarter and Tower-Soudan ran its record to 14-0 with a 65-39 drubbing of the host Timberwolves. T-S pounced on the Wolves in the second quarter, scoring off of turnovers, on fast-breaks and inside feeds to Jamnick.A 21-7 advantage in the second helped the Golden Eagles to a 35-13 lead at the half, and all but sealed the Arrowhead Conference game. Ely, which downed Silver Bay earlier in the week, fell to 7-7 on the year and headed into a pivotal stretch that includes Section 7AA games against Duluth Marshall (Saturday), Two Harbors (tonight) and Eveleth-Gilbert (Thursday). The Wolves weren’t much of a match for T-S, which is ranked eighth in the state in Class A. Jamnick dominated inside and the Golden Eagles also got double-digit nights from senior guards Alex Tomsich (17 points) and Whitney Johnson (13). Tower-Soudan led 12-6 after a slow-paced first quarter but quickly warmed up after that. Ely’s high scorer was senior center Angie Mackie, who scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. The Wolves were cold from the outside, but ninth-grader Tomi McDonald did reach the 10-point mark. Both Barb Klun and Jackie Lekatz, who just returned from a knee injury, had eight points for the Wolves. Wolves 37, Silver Bay 33 Trailing 24-21 after three quarters, Ely rallied in the fourth and won the nonconference game on the road. Mackie was the difference, scoring most of her 18 points in the second half. Ely moved the ball well against the Mariners in the second half and Mackie was effective in the post. Klun scored eight points, McDonald finished with six and Candice Smrekar had three points for the Wolves. • Thursday’s game with Tower-Soudan kicked off a five-game, eight-day swing for the Wolves. In addition to the 7AA games mentioned earlier, Ely hosts Cook County Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) in a makeup game.
