Mesabi sweeps VCC

In their second meeting of the season with Northern Division rival Mesabi, the Vermilion Ironwomen made progress, but not enough to topple the Norse.Mesabi came to the Vermilion gymnasium Wednesday night and left with a Northern Division volleyball sweep.The 30-22, 30-16, 30-28 decision was much closer, however, than a lopsided sweep recorded by the Norse when the two teams met earlier this fall.Vermilion fell to 0-7 for the sseason.Molly Trombley led Vermilion with 18 digs and 16 set assists, while teammate Kristin Davis added seven kills and 14 digs.Tina Sandvig and Lacie Glumack combined for 26 kills for Mesabi.In earlier action, Itasca beat VCC 30-22, 30-9, 30-14 in a Sept. 24 match in Ely.Vermilion has a busy week ahead, starting with a rematch with Itasca tonight in Grand Rapids, and home dates this weekend with Northland (Friday) and Central Lakes (Saturday).
