New shop repairs recreational equipment

Recreation and vacation times are valuable and you want to be sure your boat motor, 3-wheeler, ATV or snowmobile purrs along. But when something goes wrong and you have to stop your engine, call Troy and Sheila at Ely Powersports and Repair. Troy Tuhkanen and Sheila Mora-vitz have teamed up to rev up a new ATV, snowmobile and marine repair shop and dockside service in Ely. The business opened on July 5 on the west end of town sharing space in the old Mike Coombe Ford building where the Bear Center and Spirit of the Wilderness are now. Troy, who is originally from Cotton, MN managed a business just like this for three years in Duluth. He intended to purchase that business but the deal fell through. And since his fiancée, Sheila Moravitz is from Ely and has a lot of family here, they decided to start the same type of business in Ely and have mostly family operating it. They will try to have a very rapid turn around, fix it fast and get it back as soon as possible. If necessary, Troy will go right to the place where your boat is if you can’t get the boat out and to the shop. A lot of places either have to go a long way to get to a public landing or have no access to get the boat out. Troy can go right to the boat and fix it there. People on vacation who have motor trouble can call up Troy (365-8699), tell him where the boat is, they can go home and when they come back, the boat is fixed. Troy can also pick up and deliver snowmobiles and ATVs if someone so wishes. Another service they will offer this fall is winterizing boats and shrinkwrapping them. Superior Shrinkwrap is coming up from Duluth the weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 11 and 12) for boat owners to get ready for winter. The shrink wrap goes on as a big tarp and is heated with a torch. The heat shrinks the plastic and makes it nice and tight so the rain and snow roll right off of it. In the future Troy is looking forward to getting a Yamaha dealership which would include Yamaha outboard motors, ATVs, and snowmobiles. He also plans to get a Suzuki outboard dealership and will have many accessories and carry a line of winter clothing for snowmobiling as well. Anything he doesn’t have in stock he can order. It won’t be long and he will be selling sport and fishing boats, motors, snowmobiles and ATVs.
