GOOD NEIGHBOR = Ely Unsung Hero Gordy Franks

NEIGHBORS Gordon Franks and his wife Audrey are heroes for Cindy Nicholson (center). Photo by Cam Weisert

Cindy Nicholson nominated Washington Street neighbor Gordy Franks and they received this week’s prizes. Cindy wrote, “Even since I moved next door to Gordy, he has come over with his four wheeler/snow blower to move my snow. Even when I try to beat him to it I fail. He also uses his riding mower in the summer to mow my lawn. He’s seen me with my push mower and tells me he can do it faster as long as he is mowing his too. It’s been almost 20 years and I appreciate him as much now as I did at year one. He and Audrey are the best neighbors ever!”

Lillian Seme, 97, of Ely, dies

Lillian Esther (Taapa) Seme, 97, of Ely, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. She was born in 1921 in Embarrass, the daughter of Charles and Mary Taapa.
In 1946 she married Anton Frank Seme and they had two sons: Anthony and Mark.
Lillian was an excellent wife, mother and homemaker, always putting her family first. She loved cooking and making potica, even on a wood range. Coming back to the woods gave her joy. She love the birds and critters, even bears and wolves although she did have to fend off a bear with a pistol once.
During WWII she was in Seattle, WA building B-17s and B-29s for the war effort. A true “Lil” the Riveter!
