Nolan congratulates Congressman-Elect Pete Stauber and offers assistance during transition

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan telephoned Congressman-elect Pete Stauber Wednesday to offer congratulations on Stauber’s election victory Tuesday, and offer any and all assistance in transitioning Minnesota’s 8th District Congressional office to the new representative.
“Pete and I had a warm and cordial conversation to discuss the orderly transition of the office, as well as information regarding legislative efforts he may wish to continue after he begins his service in Washington,” Nolan said. “This Congressional seat belongs to the great people of Minnesota’s Eighth District, and my staff and I are committed to ensuring that they continue to receive top-notch, uninterrupted service as long as we remain in office.”
Nolan added that he and Stauber agreed to be in close communication over the coming weeks leading up to the onset of the new Congress in January.

Home on the Range - A mighty oak has fallen

One of my clearest and most consistent memories of Grandpa Kuehl would be him coming home from work. In from the cold, pulling heavy boots off, gloves and coat hung to dry near the stove in the porch, thermos and lunch pail on the steps.
Up to the kitchen to take his place at the head of the dining room table. Gram would feed him and then off to his chair in the living room to read the Duluth paper, or if it was Saturday, the Ely Echo. Larry King blaring on the TV…
Grandpa was a picture of a hard worker. He didn’t know how to not work! As a kid, driving out to see him at his latest logging site was a frequent outing. I’d bet there are photos of each of the grandkids climbing a woodpile Grandpa had cut … maybe even a few of the Great Grandkids too!

Heidi Omerza is the top vote-getter in Ely

The third time was the charm for Angela Campbell.

After unsuccessful previous runs for both mayor and city council, Campbell won a spot on the Ely City Council Tuesday, finishing third in a four-way race for three council seats.

Longtime council member Heidi Omerza was the top vote-getter with 1,082 votes while fellow incumbent Albert Forsman (984) took second, while Campbell collected 860 votes to edge out incumbent Dan Forsman by. 63 votes.

Campbell campaigned heavily for the position and was a frequent council critic the last several months, voicing her opposition to the proposed sale of the Ely Community Center building and submitting her own bid to buy the 80-year-old landmark.

Mayor Chuck Novak was re-elected Tuesday while running unopposed while Omerza, Forsman and Campbell won four-year terms on the council.
