Trout Whisperer - Use at your own risk

It’s an old bridge, on a not too worn path. On the bridge itself it says, use at your own risk. Many don’t.
The sign, just the small metal placard, if it’s any indicator, has plenty of bullet holes through it. One bent corner and splotchy blotches where paint over the years has been chipped off by Lord only knows what.
Today along its extremely thin length it’s frosted in snow, one gorgeous dump of a hump in the middle of the bridge all plumped up and its oozing out of the rusted rails almost, but not quite leaking, and I think with one warm day or a stout wind, those unsupported snowy outcroppings are bound to go down.
Down below, in a narrow ravine, the serpentine stream’s course is totally snow covered with rounded bends as it wends its way out of my eyesight.

Native son: What a night

On Saturday March 2, one of our coldest bone chilling nights, St John’s University Men’s Chorus arrived in Ely and gave a performance which I don’t think anyone who was there will ever forget! Twenty three male voices in perfect harmony with each other singing spiritual and popular music in the great hall of St Anthony’s Church.
The Chorus was founded in 1948 by Father James Kelly. The present director is Axel Theimer and I had the great pleasure of meeting him when I arrived at the church. He had just finished rehearsing his group before they went downstairs to change into their performance attire.
In 1960 the chorus at that time made their first of many trips to Europe. They also perform frequently for state and regional music conventions for which they have received numerous prizes and awards.

Making memories in Ely

by Tom Coombe
Finn Liesching came to Ely in part to hone up on his English skills and try out American sports.
The exchange student from Germany has done that, and much more, in his seven months in the community.
Liesching shared some of his experiences and anecdotes this week at the Tuesday Group luncheon.
“It’s been a blast here in Ely,” said Liesching, who is here as part of the Rotary Exchange Student initiative. “It’s been such a good time. All the people are so welcoming.”
The youngest of four children, Liesching opted to go abroad for his junior year of high school and will have two more years of high school to complete once he returns to his home, near the French border.
While he grew up playing soccer, the signature sport of his nation, Liesching also became a fan of the NFL and dabbled in American football in his home country.

Marilyn Johnson, 82, of White Bear Lake, dies

Marilyn Johnson, 82, of White Bear Lake, formerly of Ely passed away on March 2, 2019, after a fall on a wonderful trip to Costa Rica. She was born on July 13, 1936, in Cohasset, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlie and Eleanor Clusiau. She was survived by her beloved husband, Bruce, her son, Mark (Désirée), her daughter, Denise, her son, Jeff (Holly), 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren (with another girl on the way). She was in one of the first classes at the University of Minnesota to get a degree in Physical Therapy. She was a devout Catholic, working in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and bringing communion to the homebound, among other duties. When Marilyn said she would pray for you, she meant it, and she kept a current written prayer list that she attended to every evening. She loved and was loved by many, many people. One of the songs she loved was “You Gotta Dance Till You Drop” by Robert Robinson, and she did.
