Hook and Bullet Club by Nick Wognum

A father-daughter weekend was filled with sports during a trip to the Twin Cities. That wasn’t the original plan, however.
Megan and I were going to spend a good part of the day Saturday (her birthday) out at the shack.
There’s a stand or two that needs to come down before winter actually arrives. Plus there’s some trail cameras that need to be retrieved.
The shack is basically in second season mode. You could go out there and be able to stay, it hasn’t been totally shut down for winter.
Those plans got put on hold Friday.
We already had tickets to the Vikings game on Sunday thanks to Rob selling me his seats. A call from Chuck offering two tickets to the Minnesota Wild game on Saturday for a song was too good of a deal to pass up.
Our one day, down and back trip became an overnight just like that. The shack would have to wait.

Shining on the home course

by Tom Coombe
The Ely Nordic Wolves were in familiar territory and made the most of it.
Sophomore all-stater Jasper Johnston dominated the boys race and Ely swept to the boys title during the ski teams’ home-opening meet, held Dec. 13 at Hidden Valley.
Johnston was one of four Wolves in the top-10 of the boys standings while Ely’s Zoe Devine and Kalyssa Eilrich both bagged top-10 finishes among the girls.
Ely was first among five boys teams and the girls took third at an event that brought about 200 skiers to town.
While the Wolves are perennial contenders in Section 7, Ely Head Coach Paula Anderson cautioned against putting too much stock in the results of the early-season encounter, given the absence of many of the top skiers from opposing section contenders.

Heikki Lunta is alive and well in 2018

Some very old Old Timers have declared that once upon a time, maybe in the ’40s, there was a winter in which thick ice and heavy snow did not appear until close to Christmas; but as Old Timers know, Old Timers’ memories are woefully inadequate.
We had an early start with snow on the ground through deer season but a couple warm days knocked that back and now we have just enough snow for a White Christmas.
Which is probably why there’s been some consternation among members of the Ely Nordic Association, the local organization dedicated to cross country skiing, not to mention the snowmobilers and ice anglers, and those persons engaged in the winter recreation industry - resorts, motels, dog mushers, guides, clothing stores, sport shops, live bait dealers, restaurants, gas stations - who have all been looking at the lack of snow with growing apprehension.
