Hook and Bullet Club by Nick Wognum - Company

Open a sandwich bag in the woods and you’re bound to have company. We had two Canadian jays join us in second.
My buddy Jim Ronn named them Larry and Bob and they were more than happy to share our sandwiches.
Jim’s daughter Kaitlyn had joined us for a day of working on deer stands and wanted to see if the jays would pick a piece of bread out of her hand.
She put a cloth glove on to be assured we met all safety standards and plopped down on a log.
Larry and Bob decided this was better than hunting for the pieces of bread we had been throwing in their direction.
Kaitlyn held out her hand and in came the camp robbers. I’ve heard them called gray jays, Canada jays and whiskey jack but camp robber seems to be the most appropriate.
The first jay stopped just short of Kaitlyn’s hand and checked out the situation, hopping ever closer. Kaitlyn held her ground and looked out of the corner of her eye.

NRE’s Pasmick, Mellesmoen pick up swim firsts

Brooke Pasmick and Kayla Mellesmoen picked up the only victories for Northeast Range/Ely in an Oct. 11 loss to International Falls.
The visiting Broncos dominated the high school girls swimming meet at Babbitt, taking first in nine-of-11 events en route to a 70-23 win.
But Pasmick and Mellesmoen, two upper-class leaders of a young Nighthawk team had their highlights.
The NRE duo went one-two in the 50 yard freestyle, with Pasmick beating her teammate by two-tenths of a second.
Pasmick, an Ely junior, won in 27.6 seconds and Mellesmoen (27.8) was right behind.
Mellesmoen squeaked past the Broncos’ Macey Marcotte in a tight battle in the 100 freestyle.
It was Mellesmoen victorious in 1:03.31, .19 ahead of Marcotte.
Pasmick would add a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:20.97, and NRE’s 200 freestyle relay of Mellesmoen, Lily Tedrick, Elizabeth Omerza and Kelly Thompson (2:04.87) also took second.

Glen “Scratch” Zorman, 61, of Ely, dies

Glen “Scratch” Zorman, 61, of Ely, lived until Saturday, October 13, 2018. He spent his final days at home cared for by his loving wife, Lynn, his family, friends and faithful dog, Jani.
Glen was born in Ely on April 22, 1957, the seventh child of Art and Betty Ann (Tjader) Zorman. He was an Air Force veteran and spent most of his life in Ely. Glen lived a unique life after a serious car accident in 1982 should have taken him, but we were gifted with many extra years. He thoroughly enjoyed his friends from all over the country who always made a point to stop and visit.
Glen was blessed with luck and love when he met his best friend, Lynn, whom he married in 2013. Those were his happiest years. His many friends will remember NASCAR races, rides around the lake, the occasional cocktail, and of course, an exaggerated story. He will be greatly missed.
