White Iron Prescribed Fire: anticipated ignition tomorrow, August 4

Location: T62N R12W S13 and T62N R11W S18 In northeastern Minnesota, in St. Louis County on the Kawishiwi Ranger District on the Superior National Forest (Map attached.) This 82 acre unit is located at the tip of the peninsula at the end of Ring Rock Road on the southeastern shore of White Iron Lake.

Description:
The purpose of the prescribed fire is fuel reduction and ecosystem management. Fire managers want to burn the White Iron Unit after the fuels dry slightly from recent rain but not so long afterward that all the fuels on the landscape dry out. The ideal condition is a northerly wind to blow smoke and embers away from nearby homes. Enough crews will be on duty to both accomplish the prescribed fire and to be on stand-by for response to wildfires in case they happen at the same time.

Winter Festival design created by Emma Kari

The board of the Ely Winter Festival has been planning the 2018 Festival since April, and they’re just getting warmed up. February 1-11 is going to be packed with winter gear exhibitions, snow mobile excursions, guided snowshoe hikes, the Kubb tournament, fat tire bike demos and rides, an orchestra concert, the Ely Art Walk, just to name a few. And the star of the festival, the Snow Carving Symposium!
To make 2018 really stand out, the festival board engaged Ely schools’ art teacher, Kelly Chick. Together they challenged interested students to create EWF pin designs. Local artist and seasoned pin creator Consie Powell helped the students develop and hone their ideas.
The winning design, chosen from a total of six submitted, came from junior/senior Emma Kari of Ely. Margaret Renner and Gabriel Mann also presented their fantastic designs for consideration. The EWF board extends its thanks to all the people who participated in this endeavor.

Big brother watching? County installs cameras on area highways

St. Louis County Public Works staff are installing remote data sensors at five locations around the county, four of which will include weather cameras providing a live look at the current road conditions.
The Roadway Weather Information Systems (RWIS) will help monitor weather and road conditions so that crews can make better informed decisions more quickly about when and how to treat and maintain the roads during snow and ice events.
For at least one county commissioner, the cost and the intrusiveness of cameras does not sit well.
“Should our foreman and supervisors lay in bed and watch the camera and not have a pickup truck anymore,” asked Tom Rukavina. “Quite frankly I think our process has worked pretty well over the last 100 years. The more we put up cameras the more that has to be maintained and it takes away from filling potholes and paving roads.”
Rukavina also mentioned the additional lights put up at intersections on county roads.
