DNR seeking citizen input on Lake Vermilion management plan update

There is an updated draft management plan for northern Minnesota’s Lake Vermilion, and the Department of Natural Resources is seeking input on it beginning Monday, July 17.

The new six-year plan (2017-2022) retains the walleye regulation implemented in May 2017 and is more specific than the previous plan about management goals and activities for individual fish species including walleye, muskellunge, northern pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass and panfish.

Other changes include new stocking guidelines for walleye and muskie, evaluation of the northern pike regulation, and adjustments to fish survey methods and the timing of sampling.

The plan was developed in partnership with the Lake Vermilion Fisheries Input Group comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders representing local, statewide and tribal perspectives. The 20-member group held eight meetings over eight months in 2016.

In the age of fake news, making up facts is now part of the anti-mining rhetoric

The anti-mining crowd must be getting nervous. Rep. Rick Nolan (D-MN) has put together legislation to help get the PolyMet land exchange with the Forest Service completed soon. And, he’s still pushing for the feds to renew the leases for Twin Metals Minnesota.
In Ely on a barnstorming tour, Nolan accompanied Republican Representatives Gosar, Emmer and Westerman to get a first-hand look at what Twin Metals is proposing for a copper-nickel mine south of Ely.
Back in DC, the four congressmen sent a letter signed by a total of 26 members of Congress to urge the secretaries of the Department of Interior and the Department of Agriculture to rescind the federal land withdrawal proposal and renew Twin Metals’ federal leases.
In response, one of the copycat groups sent a letter urging members not to sign the letter and providing their own so-called “facts” about the mining issue in Ely.

Legion playoffs ready to begin; Post 248 looks to make a run in wide-open District Eight Div. II field

How tight is at the top of the Eighth District Division II American Legion Baseball standings?
Ely went into the final weekend with a chance to finish anywhere from first to sixth in a nine-team field.
That sort of parity should make for an interesting district tournament, which starts Tuesday with games at both Marble and Nashwauk.
After qualifying for the high school baseball Class A state tournament, Ely faces a much more difficult road in Legion ball with the addition of Class AA schools including Esko, Proctor and Greenway, which forms the Taconite team that is hosting this week’s double-elimination event.
But Ely (9-7) is no slouch, and went into the final weekend of regular season play still in the running for the number-one seed.
Post 248 hosts Taconite Sunday (1 p.m.) to close out the regular season, following Friday night league tilts against both Esko and Deer River.

Trout Whisperer - Boys of summer

Boys of summer
At one point, there were seven of us there. Two had arm chairs under their backsides, one had a garage sale bar stool he was tottering on. The rest of us, including the owner, were just leaning on something. All of us were discussing: the weather, the Minnesota Twins, and one large velvet-headed buck, the majority of us had seen, that seems to have taken up residency at the local cemetery.
The owner’s dog is working the crowd. He nudges each of us in turn looking for a free ear scratch. After the pooch gets what he wants he goes and lays down on the concrete pad where the morning’s sun is just starting to creep in.
The room smells of a mixture of brewed coffee and sort of ripe or boiled minnows. The bait store owner says he needs to clean the minnow tanks today, but not until his wife shows up.

Computer system upgrade will affect Ely License Bureau July 20-22

The State of Minnesota is replacing the computer system that handles license tabs and other vehicle transactions, and this will affect the services offered at the Ely License Bureau for three days during the upgrade.
“The state is finally going to start this new system and in order to switch it over it’s going to take some time where the computer system for the motor vehicles will be down,” said Penny Reedy of the Ely License Bureau. “Because of that we will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 20 and 21 and on Monday, July 24.”
