Summer ball ready to begin, Local sign-up on Monday

One baseball season in Ely is winding down while another is set to start.
As the high school baseball playoffs (see related story) continue, the summer baseball season in Ely is moving forward on several fronts.
The Ely Baseball Association will hold its annual parent and volunteer sign-up session Monday, with team practices soon to follow and the first summer baseball tournament of the year on tap next weekend.
Ely’s VFW team will host the Taste of Ely Classic, a seven-team, three-day event that opens Friday, June 9, at Veterans Memorial Field.
With the summer season fast approaching, registration continues and culminates Monday.
That’s when summer sign-up wraps up at the EBA session, slated for 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field. All parents are invited to come to return registration forms and sign up for volunteer shifts in the concession stand and ticket booth.
Additional registration forms will be available at the field that evening.
Ely will field Junior League (13-and-14-year-olds), VFW (17-and-under) and American Legion (19-and-under) squads this summer.
A busy summer is set at the local ballpark, with this weekend’s VFW tournament the first of many events.
The Taste of Ely Classic runs through Sunday, June 11 and joining host Ely are: Virginia, Duluth East, Edina, International Falls, West Duluth and Babbitt-Embarrass-Soudan-Tower.
Also set for the ballpark this summer are:
• The 30th annual DQ Grill and Chill American Legion Classic, June 23-25;
• The Sir G’s Midsummer American Legion Classic, July 9-11;
• The Zup’s Food Market/Eighth District VFW Tournament, July 29-Aug. 1.
