“No kid should die of cancer”

An Ely sixth grader is on a mission to raise monies to fight childhood cancer.
Robert Towley, 11, is hosting a chili feed this Friday, Dec. 1 from 4-7 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Ely.
“I think no kids should die of cancer,” said Robert who saw firsthand the devastation the disease can do when it hit his Uncle Chad Meskill.
At a Duluth hospital, Robert took notice when a girl younger than him was getting treatment for the disease.
“Her dad said one more treatment and I’ll get anything you want,” said Robert. “She was younger than me.”
The scene hit home for Robert, who wanted to raise money to fight cancer and saw a commercial on TV for St. Jude’s Research Hospital of Memphis, TN.
“I did some research and I thought I should do something to help them,” said Robert. “They treat all kinds of diseases, mostly researching and trying to find cures for kids.”
Robert has set an ambitious goal of raising $2,500 for St. Jude’s, starting with this week’s chili feed. It is open to the public and a free will offering will be accepted.
