Prom back at the auditorium

Prom night in Ely makes its return this weekend.

For the second consecutive year, the dance will be held at Ely’s Historic State Theater but the Grand March is back on the school campus.

Closed a year ago because of the school renovation project, Washington Auditorium is the site of Grand March for the first time in four years.

Admission is $5 each for the Grand March, which takes place from 5 until 6 p.m. at the auditorium.

The last time Grand March was held at the auditorium was in 2019.  Prom was scrapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, while the following year it moved to the school gymnasium and in 2022 the theater because of the construction project.

About 40 couples and a handful of individuals are taking part in this year’s prom, a springtime tradition at Ely High School.

This years theme is “A Sky Full of Stars,” and the festivities begin in the afternoon.

Prom-goers will be dressed in their finest throughout the day, with the annual march through both the Boundary Waters Care Center and Ely’s Carefree Living slated for 2:45 and 3 p.m., respectively.

A picture session follows at Washington Auditorium, with the Grand March across the auditorium stage to follow.

From 6 to 7 p.m. is an escorted cruise through town, with dinner to follow at Insula.

The public is also invited to take photos as participants walk from Insula to the theater, on Sheridan Street, prior to the 8 p.m. dance.  The dance ends at 10 p.m.
