Richards cracks top-10 at the Ridge

Ely’s high school boys golf team tuned up for subsection competition and Jordan Richards earned all-tournament honors last week.Richards, a junior, made the all-tournament team at Wednesday’s East Range Conference championship, held at the Quarry at Giants Ridge.With an 18-hole 82, Richards took seventh overall, 10 strokes behind winner Tyler Hill of Virginia.Teammates Gunnar Johnson (87) and Richie Milovich (89) also broke 90, sparking the Wolves to a third-place finish in the six-team meet.Charlie Kellerman shot a 96 for the Wolves, while Kyle Kratt (100), Nate Huisman (110), George Burger (118) and Warren Burger (127) were next.Virginia ran away with the team title with a 315. Eveleth-Gilbert was next at 351 and Ely finished third with a 354, placing ahead of BEST, Cook and Mesabi East.At Monday’s meet, Richards again led the way in the Ely lineup with an 85, but that wasn’t enough to crack the top-10.Kratt was Ely’s second-best finisher with a 90, with Johnson (92) and Milovich (95) close behind.Kellerman finished with a 103 and Huisman recorded a 117 for Ely, which took 13th in the 18-team meet.Cook’s Skyler Wilken and Virginia’s Ashley Starr were named the 2005 winners of the Loren Lamppa Memorial Award, which goes to the most dedicated golfer in the ERC. The award is named in honor of the late Loren Lamppa, former coach at Babbitt-Embarrass.• Next up for the golf team is the Section 7A North Subsection meet, set for Tuesday at Giants Ridge.
