Scott erupts for 49

Tim Scott is on his way to becoming one of the select few players in Minnesota to amass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in his high school basketball career. And on Jan. 28, the Ely senior set a single-game scoring mark for the local boys program, pouring in 49 points in a 92-62 victory over Mesabi Academy. The 6-3 Scott, who has 1,886 points and 944 rebounds in his prep career, was a one-man scoring machine against the Bulldogs, netting 27 points in the first half, 37 through three quarters and breaking the old program record of 47 - set by Reed Petersen four years ago - with two minutes left.Scott scored 40 points the next afternoon as Ely upended Lake of the Woods 56-54 in overtime, and leads all northern Minnesota players with a 28.8 points per game average this winter. The Wolves, 10-5, won two out of three games during the week. A disastrous third quarter Tuesday night cost them dearly as Cook rallied to win the Arrowhead Conference game 63-57.“It was nice to get two of them,” said Ely Head Coach Tom McDonald. “Three of them with the (Int.) Falls in there the week before. We played well for three quarters against Cook but the third quarter just killed us.”Scott scored 28 points in the game for the Wolves and Ely bolted out to a 19-12 lead after one quarter. It was 31-26 Ely when the roof caved in on the Wolves. They made eight third quarter turnovers and the Little Gophers - paced by senior Joel Anderson - rallied to take the lead.Anderson led all scorers with 29 points and the physical Gophers (11-4) got 18 points from Bruce Merrell. The Wolves’ fourth quarter comeback attempt fell short, even though Cook missed nine free throws in the game, including some in the closing minutes.Junior Eric McDonald scored 13 points for the Wolves while Nick Furnstahl added seven points and Mike Popesh contributed six.Scott had 13 rebounds and nine steals to go with his 28 points.Wolves 56, Lake of the Woods 54It took overtime to do it, but the Wolves battled back from a 14-point first half deficit and won the nonconference game.“We just clawed our way back and Timmy hit some big shots in the second half,” said Tom McDonald.Scott carried the Wolves, scoring 40 of Ely’s 56 points and coming through several times down the stretch.Eric McDonald scored eight points and no other Ely player scored more than four.Adam Lund had 22 points for the Bears (7-11).Wolves 92, Mesabi Academy 62A makeup date, an unheralded opponent and a home hockey game against high-powered Virginia all probably contributed to the sparse turnout at the high school gymnasium for this game. But Scott’s performance probably won’t be forgotten by those who were in attendance. He drained four three-pointers, scored off of steals, offensive rebounds and drives to the basket in a lopsided Ely win.The Wolves got out to a 23-13 lead after one quarter and a second quarter run made it 49-28 at the half.Scott kept scoring in the second quarter, and Ely built its lead. The closing minutes brought Scott the record.Eric McDonald had a big night as well, sinking five three-pointers and winding up with 26 points. Popesh and Furnstahl scored six points apiece.• The Wolves took on Eveleth-Gilbert Friday night and Nashwauk-Keewatin Saturday. A busy grind continues this week with games against AlBrook, Mesabi East and Carlton.
