Scott, McDonald named all-league

Tim Scott and Eric McDonald formed one of the area’s best scoring combinations in high school boys basketball.Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as both Timberwolves were named to the All-Arrowhead Conference Team, which was announced last week.Scott, who finished a stellar prep career as one of just a dozen players in Minnesota history to reach both the 2,000-point and 1,000-rebound milestones, was named All-Arrowhead for a fourth straight season. It was the first time that McDonald, a junior, was recognized. Both Wolves were among the top 11 players in the conference, according to league coaches, and Ely Head Coach Tom McDonald was among those saluting their performances.“Tim, I think as expected, just dominated games for us,” said McDonald. “He led us in almost every category that we had. And Eric was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect him to score that much or shoot that well.”Scott was one of the region’s top scorers, pouring in 27.8 points per game and reaching double digits (11.2 per contest) in rebounds, as well.Included in those numbers was a 49-point outburst - a single-game school record - against Mesabi Academy.Eric McDonald averaged over 19 points per game, with a 40-point game against Silver Bay.The rest of the All-Arrowhead squad included Steve Jamnick, Tower-Soudan’s 6-10 center and two players D.J. Winfield and Dan Lanari - from Section 7A champion Mt. Iron-Buhl (see box for full squad).Among those earning honorable mention were Zach Blomberg of Babbitt-Embarrass, Tower-Soudan’s Jesse Quick, Cook’s Skyler Wilkin, Brian Jokinen of Eveleth-Gilbert and Jordan Hedlund of International Falls.
