On to sections for Spangler, Milovich

Kaytie Spangler and Richie Milovich have earned berths in this week’s Section 7A high school golf competition. The Ely linksters both advanced from Tuesday’s subsection meet at the Quarry at Giants Ridge, and they’ll be right back at the same course this Tuesday to compete with the best in 7A, with berths in the upcoming state meet at stake.Spangler, who dominated East Range Conference competition throughout the spring, fired an 18-hole 91 to take fourth place overall.Milovich, meanwhile, was the only member of Ely’s boys team to advance. He finished with an 84 and was one of several survivors from a seven-way playoff. In the subsection girls competition, Ely placed seventh overall but Spangler was right near the top. She finished five strokes off the pace set by Duluth Marshall’s Katrina Wood.Spangler, a sophomore, was the only Ely golfer among the top-10.Nicollette Leustek followed with a 121, while April Levar (135), Alison Folz (145) and Alyssa Levar (189) rounded out the Wolves’ lineup.Milovich capped his junior season by advancing to sections. He won’t be joined by any teammates at the sectional, but Jordan Richards (88) and Gunnar Johnson (90) were close to the cut.“I thought Richie, Jordan, Gunnar and Kyle (Kratt) had a chance,” said Ely Head Coach Rob Simonich. “It was a perfect day but the pin placement was horrendous. No excuses, but it was just too bad.”Ely’s Charlie Kellerman finished with a 94 and Kratt shot a 95.The medalist was Duluth Marshall’s Luke Lehtinen (74) and Ely placed seventh among 14 teams.Marshall won the team title and Virginia was second.• Ely golfer Nate Huisman had a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh hole at the local course, during a Wolves practice round Monday night.“It was unofficial, because there was nobody at the green when the ball went in,” said Simonich.
