Softball team pulls off rally

Lead Summary

by Tom Coombe
A seventh-inning rally produced the Ely Timberwolves’ most dramatic win of the spring.
Ely scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, with two coming home on Katrina Seliskar’s infield groundout to give the Wolves a 7-6 high school softball win over Mt. Iron-Buhl on Monday afternoon.
The Wolves, who evened their record at 5-5, trailed by a run when Seliskar came to the plate with runners at second and third with one out.
The tying run came home on Seliskar’s grounder to second, but Sydni Richards kept right on coming after the throw to first and she beat a high throw from the first baseman to give the hosts a walkoff victory.
The slide capped off a huge day by the senior, who was three-four-four with two runs scored and a run batted in.
Charly Flom was two-for-four with three runs scored, while Madeline Kallberg had two hits.
Seliskar and sisters Rachel and Kate Coughlin added hits for the Wolves, and Seliskar went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits and fanning four batters.
Rachel Coughlin’s solo home run was the highlight of a 10-5 victory over North Woods May 7 as Ely completed a regular season sweep.
The Wolves ripped 14 hits, with Flom, Maija Mattson, Richards, Rachel Coughlin and Kate Coughlin collecting two each.
Kallberg scored twice and drove in two runs for the Wolves.
Seliskar struck out seven and yielded seven hits to gain the pitching win.
• Ely fell 16-6 to Littlefork-Big Falls in a Wednesday afternoon home matchup.
• The Wolves were at Floodwood Friday and have road dates with Nashwauk-Keewatin (Monday) and Mt. Iron-Buhl (Thursday) before a May 20 home tilt with Northeast Range.
• Section 7A playoff action begins June 1.
