Swimmers splash Chisholm

Ely’s high school girls swimming and diving team bounced right back from a narrow loss and downed Chisholm 60-41 Tuesday afternoon.Betsy Guck won two individual events and was part of two first-place relay teams as the Timberwolves got back on the winning track after a 52-50 loss to International Falls on Oct. 13.Tuesday’s meet wasn’t nearly as close. Ely won eight of 12 events, including the final three, to take the meet by a decisive margin.Guck swam to victory in the 100 yard butterfly in 1:11.99 and earlier had a victory in the 160 individual medley (2:03.60) to her credit. She also joined Amber Adams, Maren Gotchnik and Emily Weisinger on a first-place 160 medley relay (1:41.30) foursome.Diver Kelly Bruels continued a strong season with 152 points and first-place finish.In the 100 freestyle, Nicole Charles edged Chisholm’s Megan McKean and took the victory in 1:02.65.Later, Maren Gotchnik and Charles gave the Wolves a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke, with times of 1:24.80 and 1:28.07.Laura Schulze had a second-place finish in the 160 individual medley and wound up first in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:16.46.It was Schulze, Guck, Weisinger and Charles on the Ely 400 freestyle relay unit that closed the meet with a first-place swim of 4:17.50.Ely’s Audrey Kothe had a pair of second-place showings. She was the runner-up in both the 200 and 500 freestyles.Also getting second-place finishes were Weisinger (100 freestyle), the 160 medley relay of Schulze, Charles, Bruels and Maddie Hoffmeister, and the 160 freestyle foursome of Adams, Bruels, Kothe and Gotchnik.International Falls 52, Wolves 50The meet was knotted up at 42 going into the last two events, but a one-two finish by the visiting Broncos in the 100 breaststroke, as well as a second-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay, gave them the win and spoiled Ely’s Homecoming Week matchup.How close was the meet? Twice earlier, the teams split points in certain events because of ties.The 160 medley relay event to start the contest ended in a tie, as both the Broncos’ team and the Ely unit of Adams, Gotchnik, Guck and Bruels swam a 1:39.94.Both Kothe and Guck won two individual events for Ely.Kothe was tops in the freestyle, taking the 200 in 2:18.86 and the 500 in 6:14.06.Guck cruised to victory in the 160 individual medley (2:02.31) and the 100 butterfly (1:12.25).Bruels collected 168 points to pick up another win in diving.Charles won a close race in the 100 freestyle, winning in 1:02.99.Ely got second-place finishes in the 60 freestyle (Weisinger), 500 freestyle (Adams), 160 freestyle relay (Becca Klein, K. Blanchfield, K. Jandrey, T. Bybee).Third-place showings came from Gotchnik (60 freestyle, 100 breaststroke), Schulze (160 individual medley), Weisinger (100 freestyle), Adams (100 backstroke), the 160 freestyle relay of Bruels, Hoffmiester, Sam Halwix and Kothe, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Bruels, Kothe, Charles and Gotchnik.
