Two gems for Ely’s Scott

It’s too bad that Tim Scott can’t pitch every game for Ely’s high school baseball team. When Scott is on the mound, the Wolves are hard to beat, as evident by his no-hitter against Mesabi East Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Field and a one-hitter at Duluth Marshall three days earlier. But when the senior lefty isn’t pitching it’s a different story. The Wolves lost their other three games last week, falling to 4-9 for the season.Scott faced just one batter over the minimum while tossing a 10-0, five-inning no-hitter against Mesabi East, and he fanned 15 Duluth Marshall batters during the Wolves’ 9-1 victory at Wade Stadium. But Section 7A favorite Mt. Iron-Buhl pounded out 18 hits in a 16-5 rout of the Wolves Monday night at chilly Veterans Memorial Field.Ely also dropped an 8-4 decision against Proctor (last Saturday) and fell 6-3 to Virginia May 13.There was one constant in all three losses: someone other than Scott was pitching for Ely.“When Tim throws we have a good chance to win,” said Ely Head Coach Frank Ivancich. “And it seems like now when he doesn’t pitch, we can’t get anybody out. Right now we’re so inconsistent on the mound.”Scott, one of the premiere pitchers in northern Minnesota, turned in a pair of dominant performances for the Wolves last week.Playing in front of professional and collegiate scouts in Duluth, Scott overpowered the Hilltoppers, with all but six outs recorded by strikeout. He took a shutout into the seventh, when the hosts scratched out an unearned run.Scott also helped his cause at the plate with three hits and three runs batted in. Teammates Tyler Willis and Paul Starkovich both added two hits and two RBI.Scott was nearly perfect against Mesabi East, retiring 12 straight batters to start the game before issuing a walk to open the fifth. He struck out six Mesabi East batters.Ely had little trouble at the plate against the struggling Giants (1-10), breaking the game open with a five-run third inning that included consecutive successful squeeze bunts by Willis and Eric Urbas. Scott’s two-run single finished off the rally.Scott and Colin Moberly both had two hits for the Wolves.Jay Olson singled in a run in the first while Andrew Olson drew a bases-loaded walk in the same frame. The night before, Mt. Iron-Buhl broke open a tight game with three runs in the sixth and six in the seventh.Eighth-grader Steve Golobich went four-for-five for the Rangers while teammates Matt Niskanen, Dan Lanari and Steve Towner all finished with three hits apiece.MIB roughed up losing pitcher Starkovich as well as relievers Nick Furnstahl and Chris Erickson.Lanari got the pitching win, holding the Wolves to seven hits, including two by Moberly. Matt High drove in two runs for the Wolves.Moberly was tagged with the pitching loss at Proctor, where the Rails scored four in the fifth to break open a 4-2 ballgame. At the plate, Willis, Moberly and High had two hits.• The Wolves have their ballyhooed ‘Dome and Home’ doubleheader today, starting with an 8:30 a.m. game against Eveleth-Gilbert at the Metrodome, and then returning to Ely to take on International Falls (8 p.m., Veterans Memorial Field).Ely wraps up the regular season with a game at Cook (Wednesday) and a home tilt against Nashwauk-Keewatin. The Section 7AA playoffs start June 1.
