Vermilion adds third Ely player

Lead Summary

When the Vermilion Ironmen return to the baseball diamond in 2021, there will be some familiar faces on the team.
Nils DeRemee became the latest local player to commit to Vermilion, following fellow Ely High School senior Dalton Schreffler, who committed earlier in the month.
The two current Ely Timberwolves will join 2019 Ely graduate Tyler Housey, as well as senior Danny Crockett of North Woods, on the Vermilion roster next season.
All four local players are teammates on Ely’s American Legion baseball team.
“We’re thrilled to have so many local guys on our roster,” said Tom Coombe, head baseball coach at VCC. “While students and baseball players come to Vermilion from all over the state and elsewhere in the nation, there’s a great high school baseball program in Ely and it means a lot to us that these guys are sticking around to play at home.”
A four-year starter for the Wolves, DeRemee has developed into one of the top second basemen in Section 7A.
DeRemee has provided both the Wolves and Ely’s Legion team with consistent defense and he has developed at the plate, hitting .329 with 12 RBI during the Legion season with a team-best .485 on-base percentage.
“Nils is a scrappy player who is going to be in the mix to get some playing time for us,” said Coombe. “He’s the kind of guy you want to have on your team. He’s a good student and teammate and dedicated to the game. Now he’ll get a chance to play at a higher level.”
While Housey was on the VCC roster this season on a team that had its year cut short by the coronavirus, he was not charged with a year of eligibility. He’ll retain freshman status along with about 10 other returning players.
The incoming freshman group includes DeRemee, Schreffler and Crockett as well as:
• Connor Craven, OF, Walker, Minn.;
• Logan Engle, C-OF, Antamonte Springs, Fla.;
• Alec Johnson, OF, Minneola, Fla.;
• Drew Birko, P; Ocoee, Fla.
• Jovann Hamlin-Arana, 2B-C-P, Burien, Wash.;
• Dan Mistic, OF, Nevis, Minn.;
• Cole Ramczyk, IF-OF-P, Wild Rose, Wisc.;
• Crespin Kulp-Herrera, P, Alexandria, Minn.;
• Caden Schillinger, P-C-OF, Spencer, Wisc.
