Ely’s Chix with Stix came home as champions, returning from Marquette, MI after taking first place in a women’s hockey tournament there.
After beating a team from Milwaukee and the Northern Ice out of Cheboygan, MI, the Ely women faced off with the home team Northern Lights.
A shorthanded goal from McKenzie Schreffler got the Ely team on the board in the opening period, and Sylvia Shock followed with a second- period unassisted goal to make it 2-0.
Northern Lights rallied to tie the game at two but before the end of the second period, Alyssa Richards sniped one in from a faceoff pass from Tiffany Zemke, giving Ely a 3-2 lead going into the final period.
In the third, Zemke topped it off with an unassisted goal.
Earlier in the tournament, goaltender Michelle Wagoner had two shutouts and some Ely Chix with Stix players got their first goals ever.
In the finals, Ely had overcome penalties and a five-on-three situation late in the game. They wound up bringing home the hardware to start out the season.
From here, practices will continue twice a week with possible tournaments planned in January at the Pirates’ Parley in DeForest, WI and The Siege of Lake Superior in Duluth in March. They are also hoping to take on the Duluth Warriors again in February.
