Ely’s Zemke, Oelke are honored

Two Wolves make All-District team

Ely’s high school football team has a pair of all-district honorees.

Seniors Jayden Zemke and Jesse Oelke were both picked to the All-Northeast District, Silver Division Team, as picked by league coaches.

Both seniors were two-way starters for an Ely team that picked up a pair of wins this fall.

Zemke not only anchored the Wolves’ offensive line, but he was a key contributor on defense as well.

For the fall, he recorded 32 tackles with a sack and a blocked kick.

“Jayden was a staple on our ‘O’ line,” said Ely Head Coach Louie Gerzin. “He played every snap and thrived with his speed and size.”

Oelke, meanwhile, was also a two-way starter.

On offense, he was one of Ely’s top backs with 225 yards rushing, 36 yards receiving, two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. He played a pivotal role in the Wolves’ Homecoming win over Chisholm.

On defense, Oelke finished with 57 tackles.

“Jesse’s tenacity on defense was the best on the team,” said Gerzin. “His strength was speed and fearlessness.”

Two other Wolves also gained honorable mention.

Junior Sean Merriman was the Wolves’ leading rusher this season and also anchored the defensive secondary.

Sophomore Arturo Cameron moved from the line to a running back position during the course of the season and plowed his way to many key yards in the home stretch, including in the victories over Chisholm and East Central.
