Showing off their hardearned hardware from last weekend’s Squirt Chiller Challenge Tournament in Hayward, WI, was the Ely Squirt hockey team.
The Ely Wolves, with their small but mighty team of 11 players, distinguished themselves among a pool of eight teams, with a decisive win, beating Chippewa Falls (8-2) in the championship game. Ely also defeated the Blizzard (3-2), and Hayward (6-2) in tournament play, to position themselves to square off for their first place finish. Fiercely goaltending for the Squirt team throughout the weekend were Charlie McCarter, who also skated two games outside the net, finishing with a hat trick in each, and Wyatt Pace, tending the net with two solid performances between the pipes, one being the final winning championship matchup, and adding a goal for the Wolves in the game he skated out.
Also helping out Ely’s side of the scoreboard in game play were Eero Suter, who chipped in a goal; Kyler Matteson-Stevens, who lit the lamp twice; and Arrow Halbakken, who contributed a hat trick plus one in the Saturday evening contest along with another hat trick in the championship bout.
