Stoplight control returns in Ely March 19

Stoplight control returns in Ely March 19

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will be returning traffic control to signalized intersections on Highway 1/169 (Sheridan Street) in Ely on Thursday, March 19, weather dependent.

The intersections are at Hwy 1/169 and Central Avenue and Hwy 1/169 and Third Avenue East. The signals have been in flashing red with stop signs for approximately six weeks.

These changes were based on engineering studies and public input for the two intersections assessing improving safety and intersection operations.

The signals are near the end of their expected service lives, and MnDOT is looking at mid-to-long-term solutions for them.

The signals will remain in normal operation before another trial period occurs this summer. During this time, MnDOT and the city will be monitoring summer tourist season operations.

Members of the public are welcome to provide feedback on the temporary stop condition through MnDOT’s feedback website by selecting District 1 (Northeastern Minnesota): www.mndot.gov/information/submit.
