Patriotic theme as annual event set for April 9 at GEL

Chamber plans “Celebrate Ely”

A retired Green Beret is set to deliver the keynote address, and there will be a patriotic theme at an annual event sponsored by the Ely Chamber of Commerce.

This year’s Celebrate Ely event is on for Thursday, April 9 at the Grand Ely Lodge.

In addition to dinner, a social hour and the recognition of those who win the Chamber’s annual awards, the event will feature an appearance by speaker Colonel Mark “The Spark” Johnson and the Chamber has once again come up with a special theme for the night.

After going with a safari and pirate themed nights the last two years, the Chamber will celebrate America’s 250th birthday and guests are encouraged, but not required, to dress as their favorite American hero or era or arrive in their favorite flannel and jeans.

A prize will be awarded for the best-dressed guest.

The Celebrate Ely night, a spinoff of what was once known as “Smile, You’re in Ely,” also includes a special keynote speaker.

A retired Green Beret with 21 years of service, Johnson has led elite teams on highstakes missions across 55 nations. In his presentation, “Achieving Success Beyond Expectations,” he will translate “Green Beret Secrets” of leadership, motivation, and fearlessness into actionable strategies for Ely’s business leaders, educators, and community members.

“Our business community is in a constant state of growth and evolution,” said Eva Sebesta, Executive Director of the Ely Chamber of Commerce. “The Celebrate Ely dinner is our chance to pause, network, and recognize the ‘Good Neighbors’ and ‘Good Citizens’ who go above and beyond to support our region’s unique economic and social landscape.”

The Chamber will announce the winners of its annual awards, including a Jackpine Bob Cary Spirit, a Good Citizen Volunteer, an Excellence in Customer Service and Good Neighbor Business awards.

The evening starts with a 4:30 p.m. social hour featuring a cash bar, and a buffet dinner follows at 5:45 p.m., featuring bourbon roast beef, pork loin with apple-cognac glaze, wild mushroom ravioli and wild rice casserole.

The Chamber award winners will be announced around 6:30 p.m., with Johnson’s keynote address to follow.

Tickets are $30 for the general public and $25 for veterans and an April 3 deadline is in place for reservations.

Tickets may be reserved by calling 365-6123 or via email at [email protected], or by visiting the Chamber at its offices at the new Ely Regional Trailhead Center.
