At the Ely Public Library on Tuesday, April 7 at 2 p.m. the program will be Get Crafty: DIY Bookpage Flower Bouquets - for adults and older teens. Do you ever wonder what you should do with an old book? In this class, we will take old, discarded books and give them a new life in the form of a bookpage flower bouquet. Join Tricia as we learn how to make a few different kinds of flowers to brighten up any space. Registration is required. Please bring a hot glue gun.
At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, April 8 at 1 p.m. the program will be Curiosity Cohort : Balloon Animals – for adults and older teens. Want to learn a fun and inexpensive way to entertain kids … try making balloon animals. Experiment with some simple shapes and combine them to make balloon art. Please pre-register for this program so that we have enough supplies. Note that you will need to be able to blow up and tie balloons on your own. This program is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
At the Ely Public Library on Thursday, April 9 at 3 p.m. the program will be author Russ Vanderboom – for adults. Join Minnesota author Russ Vanderboom as he talks about his books – The Good Guy List and North Star Resort – and his writing process.
The Ely Chamber of Commerce will celebrate America’s 250th at its Annual Networking Dinner on Thursday, April 9 at the Grand Ely Lodge with a social hour at 4:30 p.m., a buffet dinner at 5:45 p.m. and a program at 6:30 p.m. The keynote speaker is former Green Beret Mark “The Spark” Johnson. Tickets are $30 per person or $25 for veterans and are available from the Chamber (218-365-6123).
Free public screening of “Bad Faith” (2024), a feature- length documentary that explores how religion and politics interact in the United States, with a focus on the rise of the political ideology of Christian nationalism. It includes voices from faith communities, historians, and everyday people. The film invites viewers to grapple with a complex topic that is gaining traction in American public life today. It is not an indictment of the Christian faith or any religion or religious belief. Optional discussion afterward. Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Minnesota North College Vermilion Campus Theatre. Presented by Ely Indivisible’s Separation of Church & State Issue Group.
On Saturday, April 25 there will be the annual Community Cleanup and Tree Mulching, a volunteer event. Volunteers are invited to help clean up Ely and mulch community trees for Arbor Day. No drop-offs, this is a volunteer-only event.
Spring Cleanup Days, a junk drop-off event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, May 15 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 16. Residents can bring unwanted items to Whiteside Park for disposal, no volunteering required.
