Ely sophomore wins three events in season opening meet

Udovich dominates in debut

Violet Udovich picked up where she left off.

After dominating area track meets as a freshman, the Ely sophomore opened the 2026 season with a similar performance - winning three events at a season- opening high school girls track meet at Crosby- Ironton High School.

Udovich was first in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes at the April 10 event as the Ely girls placed third in a field that included some larger schools.

Udovich recorded a personal best of 12.41 seconds while sprinting to the win in the 100, and she added firsts in the 200 (25.59) and 400 (58.35) as well. In the 400, her next nearest foe was about eight seconds behind.

Ely junior Kaylin Visser, who also has state meet experience, also gained a victory in the discus.

Visser also scored a convincing win in the discus with a throw of 109 feet, eight inches. The second- place finisher was about seven feet behind.

Ely’s next-highest individual finishers were sophomore Mattie Lindsay, who was second in the hurdles in 53.61 seconds, and freshman Annika Eastham, runner-up in the 100 hurdles in 18.74.

Lindsay also teamed with Elsa Ellerbroek, Katy Brophy and Isabella Macho to take second in the fourby- 800 relay in 11:01.15.

In field events, Addison Forsman came home with three top-six finishes.

The senior took fourth in the discus (85-3) and triple jump (29-5) and fifth in the long jump (13-10.5).

Ely collected 110 points to take third, behind Rock Ridge (160) and Crosby-Ironton (124) but ahead of five other teams.

•3,200 run - 8. Lucy Dunn, 16:00.93;

• 100 hurdles - 9. O’Neill, 19.64;

• 300 hurdles - 4. Macho, 54.81; 10. Eastham, 59.00; 12. O’Neill, 1:01.85;

• Four-by-100 relay - 3. O’Neill, Chantel Ridings, Sydney Cooley, Lizzy Merriman, 1:02.86;

• Four-by-200 relay - 4. June Nelson, Miriam Messerschmidt, Stella Koivisto, Merriman, 2:05.21;

• Four-by-400 relay - 4. Ridings, Kannas, Siiri Nelson, Messerschmidt, 5:14.49;

• Four-by-800 relay - 9. Ohlhauser, Kundinger, Kannas, Dunn, 12:01.67;

THIRD PLACE FOUR-BY-100 girls relay team members were Lizzy Merriman, Lily O’Neill, Chantel Ridings and Sydney Cooley.
OVER THE HURDLES went the Wolves’ Lily O’Neill and Annika Eastham.
DISTANCE RUNNER Lucy Dunn competed in the 3,200, placing eighth at Corsby-Ironton.
LONG JUMPER Addison Forsman took fifth in that event to pile up points for the Ely girls team April 10.
CARRYING THE BATON during an Ely relay was junior Oliver Hohenstein, one of several key returning athletes for the Ely boys team.
