Ely sophomore shines against state’s best at Hamline Elite Meet

Udovich sets school records

Ely’s Violet Udovich was on one of high school track’s grandest regular season stages - and clearly stood out.

The sophomore went up against the state’s best track athletes at the April 24 Hamline Elite Meet and came home with a pair of school records.

Udovich also bagged two second-place finishes, one in the 100 dash and one in the 400 during the event at St. Paul.

In the process, Udovich set two new Ely school records.

Her time in the 100 was 12.02 seconds, while she also set a new standard in the 400 at 55.2 seconds.

In comparison, that’s about a second-and-a-half faster in the 400 than Udvovich’s time of 56.84 seconds in last year’s state finals - when she was the state runner-up.

The school-record sprints were just the latest in what has been a spectacular prep career for Udovich, which has included state meet trips in both of the last two years, and section championships and section record-setting performances in both the 200 and 400 in 2025.

Udovich and the Ely track athletes have a busy week ahead - with meets at Hibbing (today), Mesabi East (Tuesday) and Chisholm (Friday).

Subsection competition is slated for May 21 at Aurora.
