Ely boys take sixth at Savage

The high school prom may have been the Ely Timberwolves’ most difficult opponent last Saturday.

Because of the festivities associated with the annual spring dance, the high school boys track team’s lineup was decimated by absences for the 70th running of the annual Doc Savage Invitational at Hibbing’s Cheever Field.

Minus several key athletes, the Ely boys were sixth among 10 teams and finished with 29 points for the day.

The Wolves’ best finish came in a relay, as junior Oliver Hohenstein joined up with sophomores Blake Houde and Wyatt Devine and freshman Grady Anderson to take third in the four-by-800 relay (8:58.3).

Ely also had a trio of fourth-place finishes.

Those came in the 800 (Devine, 2:11.06), 1,600 (Oren Solum, 5:09.48) and 3,200 (Blake Houde, 10:54.38).
