Coast Guard family wants your family to stay safe on the water during National Safe Boating Week

Coast Guard family wants your family to stay safe on the water during National Safe Boating Week

This is the time of year folks start poking around in the garage digging out the safety gear because it is National Safe Boating Week.

“This year it is from the 17th to the 25th of May and we are pushing for the basics: wear a life jacket, have your safety gear, file a float plan,” said Petty Officer First Class Sean Whelan of Coast Guard Station Duluth.

They’re the same tips offered every boating season since National Safe Boating Week began in the 50s. Many of us tend to forget those tips during the long off season when our water is frozen. None the less, the Coast Guard family including active duty, reserve and auxiliary is ready to help people in need during NSBW. The Coast Guard Auxiliary wants you to take one of their safety courses.

Good communication gear is a must during times of trouble so pack a charged cell phone or marine band radio set to Channel 16. Don’t let pranksters mess with that equipment.

Finally, your local Coastie says check and double check everything before heading out.

Finally, don’t forget to look for the Coast Guard approved stamp on your life jackets.
