DeBeltz second in IRC meet

Ely’s Cylvia DeBeltz came within three strokes of a conference title.

The senior carded a 102 over 18 holes Wednesday and placed second in the girls division at the Iron Range Conference meet, held at The Quarry at Giants Ridge.

DeBeltz finished three strokes behind individual champion Millie Lindahl-Slatinski, an International Falls ninth-grader, and had the best finish of any Class A competitor.

And one of DeBeltz’s Northeast Range/Ely teammates, eighth-grader Colette Moskowitz, finished with a 108 on the day and was fifth overall.

In 19th place was Coco Gillson, who had a 134.

Following were NRE’s Evelyn Moran (23rd, 160), Eleanor Nyquist (25th, 165) and Avery Bee (26th, 168).

NRE lagged behind in the IRC boys meet, with Rhett Johnson firing a 105 to take 39th. Johnson is a senior.

Next was eighth-grader Ethan Nickolson in 46th with a 136, followed by teammate Tyler Fritz (141, 47th) and James McCarter (144, 48th).

North Woods sophomore Peyton Swanson and Two Harbors freshman Gordon Goutermount tied for first with matching 79s.

In girls action at The Quarry on Monday, DeBeltz tied for fifth with a 96, 14 strokes back of co-winners Emma Berg and Erin Hughes of Rock Ridge.

DeBeltz again led all Class A golfers in the event, and Moskowitz placed 41st overall in the field with a 120.

Gillson (147, 55th), Moran (153, 57th) and Nyquist (185, 59th) followed.

In a May 8 meet at Virginia, DeBeltz recorded a 97 to take 16th in the tournament and first among Class A golfers.

Moskowitz was in 64th place with a 120, followed by Moran (132, 70th), Nyquist (141, 73rd) and Bee (144, 74th).

The golfers close out the regular season this week in advance of the Section 7A meet, which begins May 26 at McGregor.
