Memorial Day in Ely will include the traditional program at the cemetery.
The festivities begin at 10:30 a.m., with the keynote address to be delivered by Mary Thompson, State VFW Junior Vice Commander.
Elyite Tony Rechichi, commander of American Legion Post 248, will serve as master of ceremonies while the roll call of departed comrades will be read by the Legion’s Gerald Tyler.
Bagpiper Joe Linneman will play “Sleeping Song” and “Amazing Grace,” while a wreath will be placed at the tomb of the unknown soldier in a ceremony led by Jeanie Zaverl of Ely’s American Legion Auxiliary.
Members of the Ely Area Honor Guard will be at the cemetery to present the colors and for the salute to the honored dead. Ron Forsman will play taps to close out the program.
Ely’s Matt Janeksela will sing the national anthem while the benediction and invocation will be done by Pastor Cherish Knudson of Oasis International Church.
In case of inclement weather, the program will be moved to the theater at Vermilion Community College.
The program is sponsored by American Legion Post 248, VFW Post 2717 and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Names of Ely veterans who have passed away are printed in this week’s Ely Echo.
