Ely’s Cylvia DeBeltz picked up a conference championship but her senior season came to an end this week.
After placing first in the East Range Conference Meet May 21, DeBeltz wound up ninth overall at the Section 7A meet, held Tuesday and Wednesday at McGregor.
Over 36 holes, DeBeltz carded a 210, with matching 115s both Tuesday and Wednesday.
That wasn’t quite enough to qualify for a state berth, but DeBeltz wound up in the top-10 and five strokes out of eighth.
Sophomore Lyric Aulie of Pine River-Backus won the 7A girls title with a score of 174.
Other NRE finishers at sections were eighth-grader Collette Moskowitz, who climbed four spots Wednesday to take 22nd (242), and freshman Coco Gillson, who placed 31st with a 275.
Several days earlier, DeBeltz topped the field at the ERC Championship, held in Two Harbors at Lakeview National.
Over an 18-hole course, DeBeltz placed first with a 96 and edged out runner-up Ava Gangl of Greenway/ Nashwauk-Keewatin by three strokes.
• In boys action, Ely’s Rhett Johnson topped NRE in the 7A boys meet.
Johnson finished 28th in the section, recording a 99 and a 93 for a 36-hole score of 192.
Duluth Marshall senior Bennett Scissons blew away the field and won with a 150.
Next up for NRE was senior Tyler Fritz, who placed 42nd at 221 (104-117).
EthanNickolson (111)andMason Spate-Kurnava (117) were knocked out after the first day of play.
At the ERC meet, Johnson placed 38th (109), followed by Fritz (39th, 110) and Spate-Kurnava (42nd, 125).
