Final steps are being taken to move Ely’s Prusheck painting to a place of honor at Ely City Hall. The artist was Slovenian born Gregor Perusek, known as Harvey Gregory Prusheck in this country. To commemorate the artist and his work, a free community celebration will be held on Aug. 2 at City Hall from 11 a.m. to noon. Instead of donating to AAUW this year, please consider supporting local Ely businesses by spending those dollars with community retailers.
Ely’s second annual National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 4-8 p.m. at Whiteside Park for an evening of free family fun, community connections and plenty of Northwoods smiles. National Night Out is all about strengthening the connection between law enforcement and the community they proudly serve.
On Tuesday, Aug. 4 the Lake Vermilion Cultural Center will host “ Ink and Ivory: Stories Told in Duet” performed by Bailey Conger and Marjorie Miller in St. Mary’s Hall beginning at 6:30 p.m.
At the Ely Public Library on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. the program will be Library Scientists: Forensic Science – Teeth and Bones - geared toward fifth-sixth grades but everyone is welcome. Forensic scientists come from all branches of science. See how the biological sciences can be useful in solving crimes. Teeth and bones can be useful and criminalists often turn to dentists and anthropologists to help them investigate crimes. This program is inspired by the book “Forensic Science Projects with a Crime Lab You Can Build” by Robert Gardner.
At the Ely Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. the program will be Yoga for Kids with Mary Friedmeyer – for grades K-3. Kids and accompanying adults can bend, stretch, and pose to learn yoga basics and relax. Don’t worry about needing to bring anything other than a good attitude!
Thursday, August 6 is the date for the rescheduled July meeting of P.E.O. International, Chapter FD Ely. It will be held at Grace Lutheran Church with social at 6:30 p.m. and meeting at 7 p.m. Visiting members are welcome. Call program chair Kathy Champa at 218-220-0969 with questions.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, local artist Linda Smith will instruct a watercolor painting class titled, “ Wine and Watercolor” at the Vermilion Park Inn classroom at 30 Center Street, Soudan. Limited to 20 participants. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased on the LVCC website.
Bring your lawn chair to Whiteside Park on Monday, August 17, at 5 p.m., to hear the Jumpin’ Jehosafats. The JJs play dixieland jazz, spirituals and original tunes, and they are a lot of fun. Ely’s Suzanne Mades (flute) and Elton Brown (tuba) have been part of this Twin Cities-based band for decades. Free-will contributions will support Northern Lights Clubhouse, Well Being Development’s program supporting adults experiencing mental health and other challenges. The band will play in the open-air pavilion (where the audience can sit under cover in case of rain).
Ely Watercolor Club had to change the date of the show to Aug. 20-23. The club will again present paintings and greeting cards this summer at Ely’s Miner’s Dry building from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
