Some stories feel especially close to home. This summer, NLAA’s Reflections Dance Company presents FIRE!, an original dance production that follows one family’s journey through the devastation of a house fire and the strength they discover in one another.
When the theme of the show was chosen last fall, no one could have predicted how closely it would mirror the events that have affected our community this summer. For anyone whose life has been touched by the area wildfires, this performance may be especially meaningful.
The production also features special guest choreography from two visiting instructors. Scott Stafford’s piece is an excerpt from his full-length work Honey, bringing an energetic blend of movement and music that is sure to get audiences moving along. Matthew Wagner’s original choreography, Rebuild, is an upbeat tap number that incorporates body percussion for a dynamic and rhythmic performance. These guest artist residencies were made possible in part by a grant from Ely’s Donald G. Gardner Humanities Trust.
Director Molly Olson, together with the dancers, has created the story of a family with three daughters whose lives are forever changed when their home is destroyed by fire. The blaze is accidentally sparked by the reckless actions of one of the girls. Although firefighters ultimately extinguish the flames, the fire spreads to the surrounding forest. The story explores the dual nature of fire, its power to destroy, but also its ability to make way for renewal and new growth. As the community rallies around the family, the production celebrates compassion, cooperation, and resilience, values that have been powerfully demonstrated in Ely this summer.
In the wake of the July Lightning Incident in the Ely area, FIRE! offers a timely reminder that even after great loss, communities can come together with hope, generosity, and strength. Featuring expressive dance and live music, this original production promises to be both moving and uplifting.
