In honor of our celebration of this 39th year achievement, the Woodland Presbyterian Church in Babbitt will be hosting our community “Pig Roast and Corn Feed” on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
In 1987, Woodland hosted its first annual corn feed. Back then, we had corn and either hot dogs or polish. Every year, Rudy and Pat Sterbenk brought true Minnesota grown sweet corn near Bemidji and donated it for this community event. For many years, our corn came from that general area.
With Minnesota’s drought conditions and other issues, the past few years, we have been forced to really search for a supplier for our corn. We were told that irrigated corn was nearly impossible to find. We contacted our own Geary Shaw in Embarrass and struck gold. This past year he has more than doubled his acreage. He said that he would systematically water his crop and would gladly supply our required 30 or 40 dozen.
In 2017, we started another tradition, “Our First Pig Roast.” This also was received very well, so we are going to do it all over again.
On Sept. 10, Woodland will be hosting its Corn Feed & Pig Roast from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. or until we sell out, serving barbecued pork and Cole Slaw, along with “all you can eat sweet corn.” Kool aid and coffee will also be provided.
This event has always been used as a money maker, earmarked toward a special church project. In recent years, this has provided our youth with the opportunity to attend summer camp, allowed necessary computer updated equipment, and assisted with our large screen virtual Sunday services. In the past years, we started funding a monthly meal for our shut-ins. Our members and friends of Woodland are treated to soups, stews, pasties etc. We cook here in our kitchen and deliver (still hot) to our less fortunate. The list changes often, but currently we are contacting about 40 less fortunate members. Our community corn feed tradition continues.
