Four firsts for Nighthawks

Visiting Cloquet left with a decisive win, but there were many highlights for Northeast Range/Ely on Tuesday at the Babbitt pool.

Those included four firstplace finishes for the Nighthawks in the high school girls swimming dual meet, which was won 57-37 by the Lumberjacks.

Lindsay Israel and Lucy Luthens both had their hands in three firsts for the Nighthawks.

Both won individual events and both were part of NRE’s two winning relays.

It was Israel, Luthens, Evelyn Moran and Raegan Borchert on a 400 freestyle relay team that won in 4:29.09, while the same foursome combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:59.55 in one of the closest races of the night. That contest was decided by .22 seconds.

Israel had a solid win in the 100 butterfly, taking first in 1:10.52, while Luthens topped the field in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:03.07.

NRE scored as follows:

It was Ice, Sadie Nelson, Ellie Klingsheim and Cora Brekke on a first-place 200 freestyle relay.
