The Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center will open for the Winter season on Dec. 1.
The Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily (seven days per week except Christmas Day) through March 9.
Talk to a naturalist, warm up by the stoves, shop the Sax-Zimporium (store), pick up a brochure, use the “World’s only Outhouse/Art Museum,” and enjoy a hike on trails and boardwalks. There is no admission fee to visit the center.
“We have a great staff of knowledgeable and enthusiastic people who can help with any questions you may have particularly about the flora and fauna of our land parcels in the Greater Sax-Zim Bog,” said executive director Sparky Stensaas.
“Pick up a map, study it and chart your course for exploration. Check out the listing of upcoming field trips and perhaps dive in to a field of knowledge you may not know much about. Knowing more about the natural world helps us to honor and protect the land.”
Head Naturalist Clinton Dexter-Nienhaus has put together a season of field trips and speakers for those who want to do a deeper dive into this bog ecosystem.
Events start at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center at 8793 Owl Avenue in Toivola.
The full season schedule of speakers, field trips, and registration instructions can be found on the website saxzim. org. The Friday speaker series is free and open to the public (no registration required).
Field trip attendance is free for members and registration is required Friends of Sax-Zim Bog is a not-for profit conservation group founded in 2010 to preserve and protect the greater Sax-Zim Bog area. We do this through land preservation, education, research, and communication.
Being one of the premier areas in the country to see boreal birds such as the Great Gray Owl and Boreal Chickadee, it attracts birders from around the world.
