NRE girls golf season begins

The high school girls golf season is underway and defending section champion Northeast Range/Ely is off to a solid start.

The Nighthawks placed second at Wednesday’s East Range Conference event at Coleraine, and they were second the day before at Virginia.

In both meets, NRE placed only behind Class AA teams.

The Nighthawks’ Maizy Sundblad had the top individual showing, tying for first on Tuesday.

Rock Ridge easily outdistanced NRE Wednesday in the team standings, and it was Carena DeBeltz with the top individual showing.

The senior was ninth overall with a nine-hole total of 50.

Danica Sundblad placed 10th (53) and Maizy Sundblad was a stroke back in 11th.

Anna Maria Mancini (22nd, 65) and Cylvia DeBeltz (25th, 67) rounded out the NRE scoring lineup.

On Tuesday, Maizy Sundblad tied for the to spot with two Rock Ridge golfers - Emma Lintula and Emma Berg - with a score of 44.

Carena DeBeltz carded a 47 to tie for fifth, and Danica Sundblad was in an 11th-place tie at 52. Mancini was 34th, scoring a 78.

The season-opener was the previous Wednesday, April 24, at Virginia.

That’s where Maizy Sundblad scored a 45 to take fourth, five strokes in beack of Berg.

Carena DeBeltz (49) took eighth at the same event and Danica Sundblad tied three others for 10th at 52.
