After making the state meet as an eighth-grader, Ely’s Violet Udovich is showing no signs of slowing down in her ninth-grade campaign.

Last weekend, Udovich set a new Ely girls track school record in the 400 meter dash, and she picked up a victory in the 200 Tuesday as the Timberwolves placed second at the Mesabi East Invitational at Aurora.

After losing a couple of events to weather, sunny skies greeted the Wolves and they made up for lost time.

Despite several prom-related absences, the Wolves more than held their own at the 69th Doc Savage Invitational, held Saturday at Hibbing.

Ely placed seventh, but Udovich sprinted away from the field in the 400, winning in 58.57 seconds to shatter a school standard set in 2006 by Jenn Zupancich.

The margin of victory for Udovich was more than impressive - as she beat her nearest foe by almost five seconds.

Udovich was third in the 100 dash in the same meet, while Mattie Lindsay teamed with Elsa Ellerbroek, Anna Ziegenmeyer and Molly Brophy to take fourth in the fourby- 800 relay.

Ely also showed off its prowess in field events with sophomore Kalyin Visser winning the discus with a throw of 109 feet, 10 inches.

• The Wolves were closer to full strength Tuesday, where they piled up 100 points and were second only to first-place Rock Ridge (175.5) in the 12-team Mesabi East Invitational. Ely had a comfortable double-digit lead over both the third (Mesabi East) and fourth (Two Harbors) place teams.

Udovich focused on the 200 in this race and won in 25.82 seconds while her cousin - sophomore Lydia Shultz - was first in the high jump in 4-10.

Visser continued her dominance in the discus, throwing 107-5 to tack on first-place points for the Wolves.

Ely’s other first came in the four-by-800 relay as Lindsay joined Ellerbroek, Isabella Macho and Molly Brophy, winning in 10:40.2.
