The ice is out and we have the names of the winners of the Ely Echo Shagawa Lake Ice Out Contest sponsored by Grand Ely Lodge.
The 2025 official ice out on Shagawa Lake was on Sunday, May 4 at 4:45 p.m. as called by Katie and Dave of the Grand Ely Lodge staff.
Ice out is official when a boat could leave Grand Ely Lodge’s dock and cross to the north side of the lake, chunks of ice notwithstanding.
Winning the first prize of $100 in Grand Ely Lodge Guest Bucks was former Echo employee Bill Stickels III with his guess of 4 p.m. on May 4.
Second prize and a $50 Ely Echo gift certificate went to Justine Carlson of Ely with a guess of 1:11 p.m. on May 4.
Third prize and $25 in Grand Ely Lodge Bucks goes to Ed Kirkpatrick of Saybrook, IL who guessed 11:14 a.m. on May 4.
Employees of Grand Ely Lodge and the Ely Echo are not eligible to win prizes. However, former employees who are now editors at other newspapers can definitely win. Thanks to everyone who entered and to all the folks at Grand Ely Lodge for making it happen.
