Five first-place finishes were part of a strong day for the Ely girls at the Iron Range Conference track meet - and sophomore Lydia Shultz had a hand in three of them.
The versatile Timberwolf won both the 400 meter dash and the high jump and was part of a first-place Ely relay as well during a sweltering meet Tuesday at International Falls.
Freshman Violet Udovich won the 100 dash and was also part of the winning relay - the four-by-400 quartet - while freshman Kaylin Visser cruised to victory in the discus.
It was all part of a fifthplace team finish at a meet in which the temperature reached an unseasonable 90 degrees.
The event also gave the Wolves more momentum as they approach subsection competition - slated for Thursday, May 22 at Aurora.
Shultz’s big day included a high jump of 5-2 and a win in the 400 in 1:02.78.
Udovich, meanwhile, sprinted to a win in the 100 in 12.54 seconds in a tight race with Chisholm sophomore Zoe Plombon.
Shultz and Udovich later teamed with Mattie Lindsay and Molly Brophy to take the four-by-400 in 4:14.14, about 10 seconds in front of the second-place unit from Mt. Iron-Buhl.
Visser had no trouble at all in the discus, tossing it 110-10 for a decisive win.
The Wolves would also pick up a second-place finish in the four-by-800 relay as Mattie Lindsay, Elsa Ellerbroek, Isabella Macho and Brophy formed a group that finished in 11:00.09.
The only other top-three finish was by Udovich, who took third in the long jump in 4-8.

Udovich, Shultz and Visser were all individual winners at the May 8 event at Hibbing.
Udovich won the 100 dash in 12.89 seconds while Shultz picked up the victory in the high jump at 5-2.
Visser tacked on another win in the discus, this time with a throw of 109-10.
Ely’s only second-place individual finish was by Udovich, who was runner-up in the 200 in 26.23.
The top Ely relay was the foursome of Lindsay, Ellerbroek, Macho and Brophy. They were second in the four-by-800 (10:39.06.)
In the four-by-400 relay, it was Shultz, Addison Forsman, Lindsay and Brophy combining to come in third in 4:21.8.
Forsman took fifth in the triple jump, Lindsay was sixth in the 800 meters and Anna Dunn wound up sixth in the 3,200.
