Shultz triple-winner at IRC

Five first-place finishes were part of a strong day for the Ely girls at the Iron Range Conference track meet - and sophomore Lydia Shultz had a hand in three of them.

The versatile Timberwolf won both the 400 meter dash and the high jump and was part of a first-place Ely relay as well during a sweltering meet Tuesday at International Falls.

Freshman Violet Udovich won the 100 dash and was also part of the winning relay - the four-by-400 quartet - while freshman Kaylin Visser cruised to victory in the discus.

It was all part of a fifthplace team finish at a meet in which the temperature reached an unseasonable 90 degrees.

The event also gave the Wolves more momentum as they approach subsection competition - slated for Thursday, May 22 at Aurora.

Shultz’s big day included a high jump of 5-2 and a win in the 400 in 1:02.78.

Udovich, meanwhile, sprinted to a win in the 100 in 12.54 seconds in a tight race with Chisholm sophomore Zoe Plombon.

Shultz and Udovich later teamed with Mattie Lindsay and Molly Brophy to take the four-by-400 in 4:14.14, about 10 seconds in front of the second-place unit from Mt. Iron-Buhl.

Visser had no trouble at all in the discus, tossing it 110-10 for a decisive win.

The Wolves would also pick up a second-place finish in the four-by-800 relay as Mattie Lindsay, Elsa Ellerbroek, Isabella Macho and Brophy formed a group that finished in 11:00.09.
