NRE girls second at Monday’s meet

NRE girls second at Monday’s meet
Carena DeBeltz took fifth place at the Rock Ridge Invite on Monday.

With three finishes in the top-11 and four among the top-15, Northeast Range/Ely was second only to host Rock Ridge at a high school girls golf event on Monday.

The Nighthawks were the runners-up and top among Class A teams at the Rock Ridge Invite - held at The Quarry at Giants Ridge.

It was the only event this week after Wednesday’s Iron Range Conference meet was scrapped because of air quality and the fires near the East Range.

Rock Ridge’s Emma Berg topped Monday’s meet with an 18-hole score of 82, while Carena DeBeltz paced NRE, tying for fourth with a 99.

Danica Sundblad was next in the Nighthawk lineup with a 102, good for seventh place overall.

Next was Maizy Sundblad (105) in 11th and Cylvia De-Beltz (119) in 15th.

The golfers were at Fortune Bay’s Wilderness course on May 8 for another girls meet.

While Rock Ridge got past Grand Rapids for the team title, NRE was seventh overall and again the best among any Class A girls team.

Maizy Sundblad was team medalist with a 105, good for 17th place.

Danica Sundblad wound up 21st with a 110 for the day, while Carena DeBeltz was four strokes back at 114 and 29th place.

Cylvia DeBeltz rounded out the NRE lineup by taking 48th with a 134.

Everyone chased senior Mia Peters of Grand Rapids, who won the event with an 86.

The golfers have another week of regular season play remaining before the Section 7A meet is held starting on May 27.
